Disclaimer 1:
Many would argue that gifts of this nature are somewhat impersonal, especially when you are used to having a tree full of presents on Christmas morning.
However, I would ask you to consider this: for the person who is truly trying to declutter, gift cards can be a perfect option for a few reasons.
They (usually) never expire, which gives the receiver an opportunity to make room for the items they might buy with your gift card.
It allows the recipient to plan ahead and gives them something to look forward to, rather than becoming overwhelmed with things that they immediately have to find a place or use for upon taking them home.
You never have to wonder if your gift was wasted or donated.
It shows that you genuinely care about their lifestyle choices and want to honor their wishes while still giving them a gift.
Disclaimer 2:
Shop local any time you can! If you’re going to get gift cards to stores or are considering consumables, shop first with your local business owners!
Takeaway thought:
When you think about Christmas morning, or your kid’s birthday party, are there a ton of gifts involved? If you only received gift card this Christmas, how would it make you feel?
It’s important that we consider questions like these to help us identify areas that we may need to address in our own journeys towards a simpler life that is filled with less stuff. It’s natural for these questions to evoke some kind of feeling and I want to challenge you to face those emotions head on. Only then can we begin to work from the baseline and move towards improvement.
